Steps to Become a Foster Parent
We walk with you from your very first question all the way to welcoming a child into your home. Here’s what the process looks like with Unity Alliance.
- Step 1: Submit Your Inquiry – Share a few details about yourself and your interest in fostering. Our team will connect with you to answer questions and talk about next steps.
- Step 2: Attend an Orientation – Join an information session to learn about foster care, the role of foster parents, and how Unity Alliance supports you throughout the journey.
- Step 3: Complete the Application & Home Study – Fill out the required paperwork and participate in a home study, where we get to know your family, your home, and your readiness to foster.
- Step 4: Receive Training & Certification – Complete pre-service training focused on trauma, attachment, and practical skills. Once finished, your home can be licensed or approved for foster care.
- Step 5: Welcome Your First Placement – When a child or sibling group who fits your home becomes available, we’ll call you. Our team stays close by as you welcome them and begin this important relationship.
Who Can Foster?
Foster parents come from all walks of life. Unity Alliance welcomes individuals and families who are ready to offer stability, encouragement, and unconditional care.
- At least 21 years of age
- Stable, safe housing (renting or owning)
- Steady, reliable income
- Ability to pass required background checks
- Willingness to work with a child’s team and family of origin
- Genuine commitment to a child’s safety, healing, and wellbeing
All family types are welcome—single adults, married couples, domestic partners, empty nesters, and blended families. What matters most is your capacity to provide a nurturing, stable home.
